Racism and Sexism in Police work

The situation in the US and perspectives on Berlin/Germany

For decades women in Berlin report about sexist insults/slurs by the police officers, disparaging gazes, jokes and indignity. Often black women and women of color are affected by these practices. However there is no systematic documentation of those reports.

Since 2002 KOP accompanies victims and affected persons of racist police violence and documents their accounts. If women are affected, they experience a specific form of racial criminalization, which is linked to their gender.

Heidi Lewis works, besides other topics, on the effects of sexism in every day life of women in the US. She will address sexist disparagement and violence in the context of racial profiling in the US. Together we will discuss, which strategies of resistance exist and try to examine the situation in Germany and Berlin.
